StairSuppliesTM offers stainless steel cable railing by the foot for your cable railing systems project. Our 5/32″ stainless steel cable by the foot is 316 Stainless Steel with highly durable properties. Although considered “Marine Grade,” StairSupplies only uses Rod Railing or Glass Railing for coastal projects, or projects within 10 miles of the coast.
Our cable comes in 1×19, which is 19 single cables wound into a single cable. When purchasing bulk footage of cable, we highly recommend using our cable railing installation kit including our cutters to give a clean cut, which allows fittings to easily slide over the ends. This cable railing is 316 Stainless Steel made for interior and exterior installation.
316 Stainless is a high grade of stainless used in architectural applications. Stainless Steel Cable Rail Installation suggestions:
Spacing for cables is 3.125″ on center, and balcony height for residential is 36″ minimum (check local codes). A 36″ railing height will require 10 cables. A 39″ handrail height requires 11 cables. A 42″ handrail height requires 12 cables. Recommended post spacing is a maximum of 4 feet between posts. Do not exceed the 4′ post spacing. Recommended cable tension is 150 pounds. Cable can make up to a 45 degree turn.
Recommended purchase: Stainless Steel Insert Sleeve. The insert sleeve covers the hole where the cable exits, giving a clean and symmetrical installation.
Cable working load limit: 750lbs. Cable breaking load limit: 2000lbs.

can I use this material with treated lumber posts?
Hi Gary,
Yes, our cable railing system can work with treated posts. However with those type of posts I wouldn’t recommend using our “Wood Inside Post Mount” system, as it’s more likely to pull out of treated posts over time. If you use our “Wood Standard” system it should work great.

What is recommended vertical distance between strands
Hi Tom,
We recommend that you space your cable 3 1/8″ on center, and that you have a post every 4ft in order to ensure that your cable doesn’t exceed 4″ deflection once installed.

Which cable should we use Stiff or Flexiable – We are doing railing on exterior deck between 6×6 cedar posts 4′ or so on center with a stair railing system as well

If you’re doing everything straight runs you should be fine with either. If you’re near water I’d suggest the 1×19 which is the more stiff.
What is the type of stainless steel do you use for the cable… 304? 316? We don’t need salt resistance.

Can you suggest the cable and anchors to Use going into masonary (cinder block)?

Can you please explain how the cable can make a 90 degree turn inside of the corner posts? Is there a trick to make this turn?

If I have 51 linear feet of deck how many feet if cable do I need for 42 inch posts?

The exact amount would depend on if you have any corners in this potential system. However, I would estimate you would need around 625 feet of cable for this job (assuming there are no corners). Feel free to call us to talk with one of our specialists about any details.

what size clearance hole diameter should I use for 5/32 dia SS cable?
Hi Cameron,
Our tension kits use a 1/2″ hole, but if you are just passing through a wood post, a 5/16″ or 1/4″ hole would be sufficient.
hi, what would a 500 ft roll cost? and do you have plastic coated wire.

Our rolls are only available in 400′ or 100′ and are only a 316 SS material.
