Key Features

  • Raised Panel Details
  • Larger Newel
  • Shoulder Trim
  • Customizable Cap
  • Stain-Grade
  • Easy Install

Mounting System

To install your 4791 Raised Panel Box Newel, you will need the Box Newel Mounting Kit. Follow our Installation Video to ensure a secure fit. The Box Newel may be installed either on the surface of the stair tread or beside the tread. Due to their precise edges, we have found that Box Newels look best on a square starting step.

Handrail Attachment

Join handrail to your 4791 Raised Panel Box Newel using a rail bolt kit. Many configurations allow handrail to mount directly into the newel; however, if your handrail is joining with your box newel on a rake, you may also require a gooseneck handrail attachment.

Cap Attachment

The cap for this box newel is sent unattached to the newel body, allowing easy access for mounting handrail. Then, after handrails are attached, the cap can be secured on-site by applying a bit of wood glue and finishing nails for increased strength.

Splitting Box Newels

In order to maintain a consistent appearance when handrail must terminate into a wall, we offer Split Box Newels. Attach the partial newel to the wall, and your handrail can be secured like normal. If you would like your Raised Panel Box Newel split in half, please select “Split in Half” in the drop-down menu above.

Clear Finish & Stain Information

StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For Box Newels we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your Box Newels.

All of our stained and clear-finished Box Newels will be coated with Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer. Using the same quality product that cabinet makers require, this lacquer is designed to resist the natural oils from hands. We use this lacquer on all of our products that will be consistently touched, such as handrails, balusters, and newels. This layer of protection will keep your Box Newels looking smooth and stain free for years to come.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSuppliesTM we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSuppliesTM, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

Hello – Can you cut box newels to the desired length before shipping? Is there an upcharge for that? Thank you.

    Hi David,
We’d be happy to do that for you, however we typically recommend that you cut it on the job site to ensure you get the height correct. So you’d just need to make sure you have the height correct before asking us to cut it. There would be no additional charge to make that cut.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I understand the base of this newel is 6.25 x 6.25″. Can you provide the dimensions of the neck of the newel? Also, is this newel solid or hollow?

The neck on this newel is 4.75″ x 4.75″, and both the top and bottom portion of the newel are hollow.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

With the neck being hollow, how do you recommend attaching the handrail to it? Do you recommend your S-9600 rail bolt kit? Or do you have another option? Thanks.

    Hi David,
We still recommend that you use the S-9600 rail bolt kit. The top cap on our 6 1/4″ box newels is removable. Therefore you have access from the top of the newel. We recommend that you run the wood threads into the handrail, and run the machine threads through the side of the box newel. This will allow you to go in through the top to tighten the bolt on the inside of the newel. When you’re done, just go ahead and glue / pin nail the cap in place.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I am looking at using the 4791 Raised Panel Newel post with the 6710 handrail for the top rail and shoe rail on the floor for the bottom rail. How is the top hand rail attached to the newel post? Does the top cap of the newl post come shipped loose so we can get inside the post for access to the mounting hardware?

Thank you for your question, Jerry. We would suggest using our
S-9600 Rail Bolt Kit to attach the handrail to the newel post. The machined end would mount into the handrail, and the wood screw end would mount into the newel. We would also suggest using a wood block on the interior of the newel for additional stability. The 4791 Raised Panel Box Newel does have an unattached cap, so you should have adequate access.

Thank you for contacting us, Scott. We can certainly take steps towards using this in an exterior application. We would need to know this is for an exterior application BEFORE we manufacture it, as we will utilize a specific process for this. We also need to make sure you are aware that regular maintenance and re-finishing would be required. If you have more questions about this, please contact us directly at sales@stairsupplies.com.
