Key Features

  • Craftsman Style
  • Recessed Channel Details
  • Solid Construction
  • Stain-Grade
  • Easy Install
  • Solid construction from glued wood
    • Face grain on two sides, edge grain on two sides

Mounting System

When installing your 4240 Box Newel, you will need the Sure-Tite Newel Fastening System. Follow our Sure-Tite Installation Guide to establish a sturdy and secure fit. The 4240 Box Newel may be installed either on the surface of the stair tread or beside the tread. Due to their precise edges, we have found that Box Newels look best on a square starting step.

Handrail Attachment

Join handrail to your 4240 Box Newel using a rail bolt kit. Many configurations allow handrail to mount directly into the newel; however, if your handrail is joining with your box newel on a rake, you may also require a gooseneck handrail attachment.

Splitting Box Newels

In order to maintain a consistent appearance when handrail must terminate into a wall, we offer Split Box Newels. Attach the partial newel to the wall, and your handrail can be secured like normal. If you would like your Box Newel split in half, please select “Split in Half” in the drop-down menu above.

Clear Finish & Stain Information

StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For Box Newels we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your Box Newels.

All of our stained and clear-finished Box Newels will be coated with Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer. Using the same quality product that cabinet makers require, this lacquer is designed to resist the natural oils from hands. We use this lacquer on all of our products that will be consistently touched, such as handrails, balusters, and newels. This layer of protection will keep your Box Newels looking smooth and stain free for years to come.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSuppliesTM we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSuppliesTM, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

How would you secure this newel post into a cement floor? 54 inches is too long for what we need. Can the post be easily cut to size without ruining it?

    Hi Shelly,
Unfortunately we don’t sell any hardware specifically designed for concrete. A local hardware store should have what you need for the actual installation.
Regarding the height, yes, it can be easily cut. We recommend using a chop or miter saw with a high quality blade.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

How would you fasten this newel to the floor if a joist is not exactly under the newel?

    Hi Robert,

You’ll probably want to add more blocking so you have a secure place to mount. Please let us know if you have any additional questions!

for the split newels, would I get both pieces or is the price for just a half newel?

    Melissa,

If you order a split newel, you will receive 2 halves (1 full) of a newel for the price listed.

We really like this newel, but I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to install it securely. Do you have any suggestions for installation to an existing staircase where the previous, now removed newel post was installed into first tread with a dowel and angled rail bolt, seemingly? This means that the treads still have ~1 inch holes where the newel and baluster dowels were inserted. Can send photos via email.

    Hi Chris,

For our 4240 Box Newel, we would typically recommend the use of our S-9403 SureTite Newel Fastener. If you have additional questions about installation, please give our team a call at 1 (866) 226-6536.

What are the finished dimensions of the 4240 4X4 post and also the finished dimensions of the half posts?

    Hi Thomas,

The 4240 Box Newel is a 4″ square that stands 54″ tall, with a 7″ top box, and a 1/2″ shoulder trim. When split, your newel would come 4″ x 2″, 54″ tall, with a 7″ top box, and a 1/2″ shoulder trim.
